Jason Vargas pitched a stellar 7 innings of shutout baseball tonight versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim giving up just 4 hits and 2 walks while recording nine strikeouts. The M's blanked the Angels in all nine frames to take the first game of the two game series.
The offense started quickly for Seattle, getting a run in the first inning and two in the third. Jack Cust got a RBI single in the first scoring Figgins, Smoak hit an RBI double to score Ichiro in the third and Cust followed with a single to score Justin Smoak. The M's had other opportunities as the game went on but failed to capitalize.
Franklin Gutierrez made his 2011 debut, playing centerfield and batting 5th in the order. His first at bat was a rally killer, grounding into a double play. No hits tonight for Guti, but we are happy to have him back.
So Vargas gets run support early and the bullpen holds it down through the 8th and 9th. Jamey Wright made it interesting in the 8th, loading the bases, but he escaped without giving up a run.
In other news, Brandon League pitched the ninth inning and didn't give up a run. He walked a batter with one out and then forced a ground ball double play to end the game.
All in all, a great game by the M's. Another solid performance by our starter and unlike Felix, Vargas will leave Safeco Field tonight with a "W".
Keep it up M's, we need to stay positive and games like this help us, the fans, stay that way!!!
