Mariners Miss A Great Opportunity

Today was a day that the only game in the AL West was the Mariners and the Angels as Texas and Oakland did not play. It was an opportunity to get within just one game of the Rangers and first place. For a moment, things looked as though they were falling into place. Then came Vernon Wells.

The M's were up 3 - 2 until the top of the 7th inning when the Angels tied the game on what should have been a great play at the plate. Torii Hunter hit a ground ball to Figgins at third and Figgy quickly turned to throw out Jeff Mathis at the plate. Olivo caught it and ended up dropping it on contact and Mathis was safe at home. Vernon Wells got up to the plate with Hunter on and hit his second homer of the day off of Vargas and that pretty much sealed the win for the Angels.

The M's had opportunity in the 8th inning with runners on 1st and 2nd and only one out, but Adam Kennedy grounded out and Olivo struck out to end the inning. Hitting wasn't terrible today, pitching wasn't terrible, all in all it was just one of those games where we were not the better team. Vargas pretty much served it up to Wells who matched our entire teams run production with two swings of the bat, maybe he'll pitch around him next time.

This game drops us to 2 games back in the standings and the Angels gain a whole game on us. Tomorrow has got to be a better end result as we send Fister to the hill against Jered Weaver. Not the matchup I would want everyday, but if we can return to where we were last homestand, I think our chances are a whole lot better.

The best thing about tonights game, as we watched the Mariners take batting practice my son got Doug Fister to throw him a baseball up to the second deck above the Angels bullpen. An exciting day for him. LET'S GO MARINERS!!!!
